"Friendship Through Education"

A raíz de los atentados del 11 de septiembre en Estados Unidos, el pasado mes de octubre el Departamento de Educación de aquel país seleccionó al Centro IEARN USA para construir una red de ONGs e instituciones de diversa índole que busca la interacción entre niños, jovenes y adultos de distintos países y culturas, con especial énfasis en los pueblos árabes.

En esta iniciativa participan además :

• CyberSchool Bus (UN)

• International Rescue Committee

• People to People International

• Sister Cities International

• ePals

• World Wise Schools (Peace Corps)

Hi everyone,

In Lebanon and more particularly in the schools I work with we are

reinforcing the schools' core values which are diversity, tolerance,

understanding and peace education. We are also focusing our efforts to

engage in projects to reinforce those values. Our students population is

International with 17 Nationalities, Lebanese, Americans, Australian,

Saudis,Canadian... so it was urgent to discuss with our students our

commitment to those values (we didbin almost every high school class).

IEARN has played a key role in helping us reach our goals and in the

crisis we are facing we will renew our commitment and focus on projects

that reinforce multi-culturalism, diversity and tolerance. I appreciated

your message Peter and feel very strongly that we have to work to break

this "stereotype" image one acquires from another culture.. (I don't think

I will ever forget my fright when I was walking in the Metro in Paris in

1978 and I was followed by a woman with a stick, shouting "Dirty Arab".

I wondered why then....I was visiting a University to persue my studies...

I opted to continue studying in Lebanon and joined the AUB.). Yes, we have

to collaborate to give our students hope, to get them to know and appreciate

one another. Like Rosy, I think that every step, project and activity is

helpful and will help us achieve our goals.

This year, we started working on YouthCaN Med and students in NYC have

contacted us to know which theme we will be working on to get us together

with partners. ……………………
